THERMOLUT insulation system for the protection of historic facades -"Good on the outside and good on the inside" - optimised internal energy of the cloister walls.
To not only conserve historically protected buildings as museums but to allow contemporary use without detriment optically or to the structural mechanics, is today a particular challenge for construction companies and construction materials. The restoration of the rooms in the gatehouse of the Michaelstein cloisters in Blankenburg in South-West Saxony-Anhalt shows, as an example, how building sections can be converted to modern yet representative rooms.
The timber framed facade of the entrance building to the cloisters received thermal insulation from the Detmold manufacturer of system construction products, SCHOMBURG. The THERMOLUT system consists of natural building materials and prevents the appearance of condensation water with the many problems associated with the internal insulation of exterior walls due to this reason.
The principle of THERMOLUT is based on the improvement of thermal performance, through the use of natural building materials such as wood fibre insulation panels as well as loam-based backing and finish coat plasters, of the existing exterior wall whether constructed from natural clay bricks, timber frames or other historic wall structures. It is important that the newly applied wall coatings are vapour permeable and can therefore breathe. Under no circumstances, as would be the case with internal insulation with a vapour barrier, must the water vapour diffusion process be so disadvantageously influenced that water from condensation can appear on the inside of the wall.
Approx. 200 m² of the inner side of the external leaves were consigned for the restoration of the rooms with 60 or 80 cm thick wood fibre insulation panels adjusted to either hand or mechanical application. In the winter months the internal insulation contributes to the heat energy and therefore saves costs and in the summer keeps the room temperatures cool. The insulation system also improves sound and fire performance and the room climate stays natural, clear and healthy.
In charge of the construction measures was the Architectural practice Planungsring GmbH from Wernigerode, implemented by the construction company Sporleder & Hecker from Quedlinburg. The occupants of the guest rooms in the gatehouse have gained a comfortable retreat. All visitors to the Michaelstein cloisters can be pleased with the mildly modernised entrance building with its traditional construction.
