Brühlsche Terrace, Dresden
Dresden has an attraction with unparalleled charm in the Brülsche Terrace. Its history, its urban form with historical buidings on the city side and the view of the river and the Elbe valley coalesce into a unique experience.
The Brülsche Terrace is over 400 years old. A short time after surface renovation in 1991, the barrel vaulted cellars were thoroughly soaked through. In the search for the cause it was discovered that no waterproofing against seepage water had been incorporated. This now had to be made good. For a second time within five years everything was ripped apart again. At all times there had to be access for tourists. Two emergency exits had to be continously available, one of them for the hotels on the city side. These conditions exerted new problems to solve for the construction company during the first building phase. The waterproofing had to be applied at approx. 1.50 m deep including all subterranean structures such as connecting bridges, heating ducts, ventilation shafts, foundations and external walls. In addition drainage had to be laid and service pipes and cables had to be renewed.
Falls were laid to approx. 3000m² that were subsequently waterproofed with the mineral-based SCHOMBURG product AQUAFIN-2K. Effective application and assurance as well as good experiences from its use in waterproofing the underground areas of the Dresden Theatre were the reasons for the decision to use the system with over twenty years provenance. It was especially important to be able to produce a seamless crossover between work carried out and that still to be carried out, because the work was dragged out over a long time period.
As the Brülsche Terrace remained open to tourists for the entire construction time, the building work was carried out in two phases with further divisions. The first phase, started in June 1996 was completed in autumn 1997. The second phase, with the same complexity, followed directly afterwards which has also been completed in the meantime. For physical reasons the cannon courtyard required a damp proof membrane and thermal insulation alongside waterproofing measures. This problem was solved with the safety insulation Foamglas which is vapourtight and stable under compression. Fixing and pointing was carried out with the bitumen vapour barrier COMBIFLEX-C2 from SCHOMBURG. The subsequent unbonded screed was in turn waterproofed with AQUAFIN-2K.
