Surface railway in Offenbach

In the course of building three new railway stations in Offenbach (marketplace, leather museum and Kaiserlei) tiles had to be laid, along with other materials, over a total area of approx. 18,000m². The German Railways Corporation contracted for the project chose suitable grouts and adhesives from SCHOMBURG. The tiles to be laid were fully vitrified tiles with formats 60 x 60cm (walls) and 60 x 30cm (floors).

ASO-UNIGRUND-K, another product from the extensive SCHOMBURG range, was used to prime the backgrounds in both wall and floor areas. MONOFLEX, a highly flexible thin bed adhesive was used to tile the wall areas. Its very good grab and high levels of polymer modification made it especially suitable for fixing these glass like tiles. Approx. 100 tonnes of MONOFLEX were used for the wall tiling.

For the floor tiling the fixers fell back on UNIFIX-FBK, a flow bed mortar that when modified with UNIFLEX-B becomes highly elastic. As in this case UNIFIX-FBK is used for the solid bed fixing of profiled and large format slabs and in heavy duty areas. When laying large format tiles in heavy duty areas the fixer comes into conflict with thixotropic properties as voids must be reduced to a minimum. With UNIFIX-FBK an extensively void-free bed can be achieved in one action as back-buttering of the tile can be dispensed with when using suitable fixing techniques (e.g. Flowline trowel).

The finishing grouting was carried out with ASO-Flexfuge, a cementitious grout.
